TEXTILE DESIGN |
motif starters
Textile designs start with a single motif. These single motifs can be used alone in a large scale on apparel, as part of an engineered design, or they can be used in multiples to create a repeated pattern on a textile.
repeat motifs
A single motif can be repeated on a textile to produce a pattern, also called a repeat. By changing the arrangement of the motif as it is repeated, another visual design can occur and appear as a horizontal or vertical stripe.
engineered designs
Sometimes the best textile designs come from changing the scale of a single motif. When this single motif or repeat pattern is strategically placed on a garment, such as center front, or on a sleeve or at the hem, it is known as an engineered print. Here are a few examples of how well placed motifs become engineered designs.
